HISTORY
The first efforts to acquire the site began in 1947 by the "80 parents of Cub Pack 165". The area was originally known as "Ravenna Swamp" (peat bog), then "80th Street Playground". The Board of Park Commissioners renamed it in 1955 to honor Waldo J. "Red" Dahl, member of the board from 1934-1936, 1941-1951 and 1951-1968, including 9 terms as president.
Something not mentioned (but you can see it here) is a nice walking/jogging trail around the outer edge of the park.
Individual View Descriptions:AnglePath1, facing SE:
- The play structure is a great example of the new style. Designed to accommodate tiny kids and bigger kids, and improved safety over older styles.
AnglePath1, facing South:
- [zoom] This 'toy' rotates around, so if you sit down on the upper portion gravity will spin you around to the bottom. Don't worry, it's not super fast.
AnglePath2, facing NE:
- Note the river bed theme.
-
- Play area to your right.
AnglePathOffshoot2, facing SE:
- Old-style spinning toy. This was here before the renovation; apparently the renovators must have felt it was still safe enough by "modern standards" to leave in place.
East11, facing East:
- This looks like a sewer access or something. Anyone have any ideas what this is and/or what it's for? Leave a comment!
East4, facing West:
- [zoom] Looks like the park lost a tree recently. :-(
East5, facing East:
- Up the stairs to the "back entrance" for Wedgwood Pool. The pool is a private membership facility, so this door is often locked.
-
- Turn left or right to see the walking/jogging trail.
East5, facing West:
- Turn left or right to see the walking/jogging trail.
East9, facing North:
- Zoom in the upper right looks like a judge's stand for Wedgwood Pool.
East9, facing NE:
- The garden here is relatively new (2007-08?). Looks great!
-
- [zoom] Looks like a judges' platform for swimming events.
East9, facing East:
- This is a dead end down here, but the pool parking lot is halfway up this hill to the left.
Mid1, facing North:
- Across the street is University Prep (private school). There's a cozy little courtyard in the middle zoom.
Mid10, facing SW:
- Note the river bed theme.
Mid9, facing North:
- Nice new 1/2 court basketball.
NE80_27NE, facing East:
- As one might imagine, this hill gets used for sledding when there's snow. See the bushes behind you that mark the "end of the road" ;-)
North1, facing SE:
- Batter up!
North6, facing SE:
- Gotta love this huge rock just sitting here behind the backstop!
South1, facing South:
- The sign says "Poodle Crossing". Hmmm...
-
- Makes me wonder what it's like living right on the edge of a large city park. Certainly you have a gigantic front yard!
South3, facing West:
- There is the kiddie wading pool. Popular during those few weeks of hot weather we get every year here in Seattle! ;-)
-
- Other nearby public wading pools are at View Ridge Park and Green Lake Park.
TurnaroundEast, facing North:
- [zoom] Neat metal sculpture.
West2, facing East:
- Step forward to enter the rock garden.
West5b, facing North:
- Turn right here to cross the field.
West5b, facing East:
- You would never know from here, but there is an outdoor pool straight across the field and up the hill. Feel free to walk across and view the park (and walking trail) from the other side.
West5b, facing South:
- Turn left here to cross the field.
West6, facing South:
- At the moment there are a lot of empty parking spots, but often in the summer evenings when there are baseball/softball games happening on 3 or 4 fields the lot is overflowing and the street is packed!
West9, facing North:
- University Prep. A private school.
-
- Zoom to see sign.
WWP_north, facing East:
- Ahead and to the right to the entrance (not pictured, yet)
WWP_north, facing West:
- Out to Dahl Field.
