Place Description:
Fort Nisqually was the first European settlement on Puget Sound, established in 1833 by The Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) of London. The original site was near the present town of DuPont, Washington.
Today, Fort Nisqually is a living history museum where volunteers and staff wear period clothing, demonstrate the crafts of the 19th century and engage visitors in historic dialogue. If a staff member asks what you do for a living and it happens to be technology-related, prepare for a very "interesting" conversation!
The fort makes for a great school field trip, which is what was happening on this day. The guides were wonderful - very knowledgeable about the history of the fort and they had a great rapport with the kids.
They also gave a detailed talk inside the Trade Store, showing a lot of old goods that would have been traded or sold here, and they had great responses to the kids' questions.
